One City – Two Earthquakes

Task description: This week we have been learning all about Christchurch and the devastating earthquakes that happened in 2010 and 2011. Our leaning intention was to find clues within the text and read between the lines to understand the hidden meaning to make a conclusion or an assumption. This week we read an article called “One City – Two Earthquakes.” We learnt the different ways to stay safe during an earthquake. For our task we had to create a piece of digital art showing how to drop, cover and hold. Check out my image below as well as my review of the article. Please feel free to leave a positive comment on my blog.

Manaiakalani Film Festival Blog Commenting

Task description: This week was the annual Maniakalani Film Festival! We were lucky enough to see our classes movie on the big screen at Hoyts. This week for our writing task we were able to watch some of the Manaiakalani Film Festival movies and create positive, thoughtful and helpful comments on the class blog of the movies. Here are some of the movies I watched and some of the comment that I left on some of the class blogs. Please leave a positive comment on my blog!

Recount: Marshmallow Challenge

Task description: This week we have been learning how to create a recount with lots of descriptive language. We had a really fun challenge to complete as a class first and that was the Marshmallow challenge. After that we had to write a recount about our experience. Check out my recount below. Please leave a positive comment on my blog.

Today room 10 completed a marshmallow challenge. In my group there was Frank, Khittamai, Winter, Alex M, Mercy and myself. We were given 20 pieces of spaghetti and 10 marshmallows. We had to build the tallest tower in the class and we only had 15 minutes.

First we had five minutes to plan out how we wanted our tower to look. We talked about how to make it the tallest tower using the materials that we had. We could not agree about what would be the best way to create the tower.

The 15 minutes started and we decided to make it long. The pasta was holding us back, it kept on falling so we tried a different way. So we put a lot, like maybe four marshmallows, to balance it. When we did that it stood up for a few minutes and then it fell. So we decided to use the wall to make it stand up.

Only one minute left and it fell again. My whole group felt so bad. Only 35 seconds left and we built it so differently like it was a one year old mess. It was fun and I really enjoyed it.

An interview with Pop

Task description: For our play A Dangerous Game we had to pretend to be a character and answer interview questions. I chose to be the character Nathan and was interviewed by Levi. Then I interviewed Levi who was playing the character Pop. Check out my interview with Pop below and let me know what you think.

A Dangerous Game

Task description: This week we have been learning about the relationships between characters. We read a play called A Dangerous Game which was a play all about how dangerous rugby and photography can be. For this task we had to choose a character from the play to interview. I chose to be Nathan and interviewed Levi who played the character Pop. Check out our interview questions and the interviews at the end of the presentation.

Scientific Method

Scientific Method

WALT: safely conduct an experiment and explain the process and results using the scientific method.
This week we are going to conduct a science experiment using the scientific method to write up the results.  Use the class brainstorm from the jam board if you need extra help.

Question

What are you trying to find out?

Will it dissolve in water?
Hypothesis

What do you think will happen?

Salt – no

Pepper – yes

Sugar – yes

Oil -no

Oats – no

Sprinkles –  no

Materials

What will you need to do the experiment?

You will need:

  • Six cups
  • A pen or pencil
  • Sprinkles
  • Oats
  • Sugar
  • Pepper
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Measuring cups
  • Paper
Procedure

What steps will you take to do the experiment?

  1. First you need to have six cups and label each of the cups what you will be putting in them.
  2. Add a teaspoon of one of the ingredients into the labelled cup.
  3. Do step 2 for each of the cups adding oil, salt, sprinkles, pepper, sugar and oats to each of the cups.
  4. Add ¼ cup of water to each of the cups
  5. Using the spoon stir the ingredients
  6. Watch and see if they dissolve.
Results

What happened during the experiment?

Ingredient Dissolved Did not dissolve
Oil
Sugar
Pepper
Salt
Sprinkles
Oats
Conclusion

What did you find out? Was your prediction correct?

Most of my predictions were correct. I thought that salt would dissolve and it did. I thought that the pepper would dissolve and it did not. I thought that the sugar would not dissolve and it did. I was correct about the others. I thought that oats, oil and sprinkles would not dissolve and they did not dissolve. The sprinkles were interesting because the water changed colour and the colour dissolved but the sprinkles stayed solid and went white.

Year 5 and 6 Camp Recount

Task description: A few weeks ago we had year 5 and 6 camp on our school field. This week for writing we had to create a recount about our camp experience. Check out my camp experience below:

Last week the students of team 4 had the 32nd camp at Pt England School. My favourite activity was Killer Zone which I will tell you more about later on. We had to sleep in tents on the field and it went for 2 nights and 3 days.

One the first day we had Killer Zone. It is where you play against other camp teams. There was the USA (Weka My Team) and Canada (Pukeko). This game was all about teamwork. Mr J Was giving us instructions to play this game. Mr J Siad “3 2 1 go” First my team went on this board (IDk What it is). We had to keep on getting this board because if we fall down it gives us 10 sec added to our time. Later on in the game we had to launch these tennis balls in Canada’s base. But Canada was stuck on that when we were finished but I respect Canada and Usa. My favourite part about the killer zone was water balloons.

Kayaking was down at Pt England Beach with Mr Somerville. We learnt how to use the paddles and then had a chance to go out on the water. It was lots of fun. I really liked kayaking.

Year 5 and 6 camp was a really fun experience and I can’t wait to do it again next year when I am a year 6.

School camp fun

Task Description: Last week I went to camp at school. This article was about a girl who went to camp at her school. This book was like the same as my camp. I experience that the girl had so much fun like I did at camp. For this task I had to make connections between the two camps and record myself reading the story.
